If You Know, You Know: Why Mikulov Is the Czech Wine Region Everyone's About to Talk About

Let’s be honest—most people head to Prague or Vienna, but wine lovers in the know are heading to Mikulov, a charming town in South Moravia, Czech Republic. I recently visited for the IWINETC Conference, and let me tell you—this place is deliciously under the radar.

Situated in the heart of Czech wine country, Mikulov is famous for its clean air, walkable town, and endless wine bars, bakeries, and coffee shops. But more importantly: this is Pálava country – the local white grape that's quickly making waves with its floral, slightly spicy character.

You can fly into Vienna or Prague, but Vienna is closer (and easier if you're coming from Barcelona). I landed at Vienna Airport and organised a smooth transfer with a lovely driver from HUSLIK. If you need his number, just ask me.

Where to Stay

My first stop was Hotel Galant (pro tip: book early, they fill up fast!). While I didn’t get to stay there, I scoped it out for you. But here's where I'd absolutely stay next time:

✪ Vinařství Fučík

Located just 10 minutes' walk from the town centre, this winery-accommodation combo is exactly the vibe. We had a beautiful barrel tasting with the winemaker, and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and authentic. Honestly, I didn’t want to leave.

Winery Visits

I teamed up with the fantastic folks at Wine Tours Moravia for a full day of tastings, and here's what we found:

ᴼ Winery Volařík

Known for its Welschriesling, Riesling, Pálava, and Grüner Veltliner, Volařík gave us a wonderful introduction to Moravian whites. Elegant wines, great snacks, and a stunning winery.

ᴼ Thaya Winery

Think: hobbit village meets modern luxury. Located near the Dyje River, this winery recently took home "Winery of the Year." Their ARPI Chardonnay Single Barrel 2021 just won Best Chardonnay in the Czech Republic. The on-site restaurant served up a delicious 3-course pairing lunch, and they even have spa facilities and charming accommodation. Bonus: we met the winemaker – young, driven, and making some truly approachable wines.

ᴼ Vinařství Nešetřil Znojmo

We ended the tour with a visit to this happy gem in nearby Znojmo (around a 50-minute drive). The winemaker is inspired by Georgian techniques, and I absolutely fell in love with their orange wine. In summer, the patio is buzzing. It's the kind of place where you just want to sit, sip, and stay.

About Pálava

No trip to Mikulov is complete without trying the region's most iconic grape: Pálava. A cross between Gewürztraminer and Muller-Thurgau, it’s known for being aromatic, floral, and just a little spicy. Think tropical fruit, orange blossom, and a touch of white pepper. It pairs beautifully with Central European cuisine — and it's so drinkable.

Final Thoughts

Mikulov is one of those places that gets under your skin in the best way. From the rolling vineyards to the incredible wines and warm hospitality, this is a wine region worth discovering.
