Corpinnat. The Future of Catalan Sparkling Wine.
When people think of Spanish sparkling wine, they often default to Cava. But in the heart of Penedès, a group of winemakers is redefining what high-quality, terroir-driven sparkling wine means. Corpinnat, established in 2017, isn’t just another label—it’s a movement that stands for excellence, tradition, and sustainability in winemaking.
What is Corpinnat?
The name Corpinnat combines “Cor” (heart) and “Pinnat” (from Penedès), symbolizing the heart of this historic wine region. Unlike Cava, which allows production in multiple regions across Spain, Corpinnat is exclusively produced in Penedès, with strict guidelines ensuring the highest quality standards.
Corpinnat producers are committed to:
✅ 100% organic viticulture – no synthetic chemicals in the vineyard
✅ Hand-harvested grapes – ensuring only the best fruit is selected
✅ Traditional method production – just like Champagne
✅ Aging requirements that exceed Cava DO standards – a minimum of 18 months on lees, with many aged far longer
✅ Exclusivity to Penedès terroir – wines must be made entirely within the region
These standards place Corpinnat among the world’s finest sparkling wines, rivaling Champagne, Franciacorta, and English Sparkling Wine.
Why Did Corpinnat Leave the Cava DO?
Before Corpinnat existed, these pioneering wineries were producing some of the best Cavas in the market. However, they felt that Cava as a designation didn’t do enough to highlight premium wines. The lack of strict quality controls, the allowance of large-scale industrial production, and the ability to source grapes from multiple regions diluted the reputation of high-end Cava.
So, in 2017, these wineries made a bold move: they left the Cava DO to create Corpinnat, setting their own uncompromising quality standards. This decision was groundbreaking, proving that terroir-driven Spanish sparkling wine deserved its own identity.
